Primary Creative Writing
Ongoing Class: Mondays 4pm - 4:45pm.
This class is suitable for Year 5 and 6 students who enjoy writing stories and also those reluctant writers who want to improve their English. Year 4 students who are working above their age group are also welcome to join.
Students will leave these sessions armed with ideas and inspiration to improve their writing. They will learn about different genres and be given examples of diverse novels. Most importantly, they will have fun and create pieces of writing that they can be proud of!
Who is this suitable for?
In a word: everyone! Creative writing sessions are suitable for all abilities and help children to express themselves, to think outside the box and to improve their communication skills.
We will focus on one or two individual overall improvements in the classes: the aim is for students to enjoy writing, gain confidence and be free to make mistakes in a nurturing and positive environment.
How does it work?
Students are introduced to the genre and given examples and suggestions of books that fit this theme. We discuss different approaches and ideas they could take as a group.
In each lesson, the writing is broken down into short stages. There are 4-5 short timed bursts of writing, which students do alone and after each block they are encouraged to share what they have written, get feedback and make improvements.
There’s no pressure to read aloud or to share work with fellow students but we love it when people do!
What will my child need?
A computer with a good internet connection is all you need. Some students prefer to write on paper: this is absolutely fine but does make it a little harder to give focused feedback. Ideally, a computer that allows students to move between Zoom and another document that they can then share is ideal.
We spend a few minutes at the start of each class agreeing our values for the lesson. It’s important that students know we are a positive, kind group and they will all feel welcomed, confident and empowered to share their writing!
My child is neurodivergent. Will these sessions be suitable?
Please do message and let us know your child’s needs before the session. Some students don’t feel confident enough to share their work and there is no pressure to do so. The sessions are structured so that younger students can take a quick bathroom break or rest their ‘Zoom eyes’ if they need to and they can work at their own pace. They are welcome to finish their stories after class if they need more time.
