Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need a private tutor?
One of the primary benefits of private tuition is that the needs of the individual student are met in a way that cannot be achieved in the larger group classroom setting. I offer a free diagnostic phone call consultation before lessons start to identify the individual needs of the learner. Tuition builds confidence, fills in gaps in learning and can enable students to make huge improvements in their grades.
How much tuition will I need?
At the start, it can be difficult to determine how much tuition a student requires. Some parents use private tuition as a year-round supplement to their child’s education. For others, just a few sessions may be required as a top-up and confidence builder prior to an exam. All parents and students would like to see private tuition as a quick fix but in reality, it is not.
However, the earlier your child starts with tuition, the better. It is much easier to achieve GCSE targets when a student starts tuition at the beginning of Year 10 rather than waiting until Year 11 mocks when the panic sets in!
Is online learning as good as face-to-face?
We think it’s better!
Lockdown and hybrid teaching meant that many students were put off online learning; with large classes, many had their cameras off and were disengaged.
We ask that all students have cameras on, unless parents have made prior arrangements. We use software to monitor what students are writing in real-time, give live feedback and share resources. Students are encouraged to ask and answer questions and will be given a variety of assessments to check their learning.
It saves time, petrol and the student’s work is available for parents and carers to see at any time and for pupils to revisit and use for revision.
Does my child need 1-2-1 learning or a small group?
Group courses are offered at a discounted rate but because the numbers are kept to a maximum of 6, they are still be tailored to individual needs. Qualified teachers are used to setting and monitoring different levels of work for up to 34 students in one class at a time! With small groups, your child will still get the same individual attention and focus as a 1-2-1 class and it can be useful for them to learn from each other and be motivated by their peers.
Our classes are differentiated to be accessible for a range of needs. The targeted group will be clear before booking e.g. “This course is for students working towards a grade 4-5 in English Language.”
In certain circumstances, some students may need a 1-2-1, which can also be arranged.
What do students need for the class?
All students need is a good internet connection and a working computer so that tuition can be conducted in a quiet atmosphere.
Sessions are held over Zoom and you will receive an invite once payment is made. We also use other programmes from time to time such as Nearpod, Kahoot! and Bitpaper. These are easy and free for students to use and they will be given full instructions. We ask that students keep their cameras on at all times unless previously agreed in a group class. The sessions are interactive and students will be asking and answering so also need a working microphone.
Tuition normally consists of 55 minute sessions. Shorter or longer sessions can be agreed in advance.
